Cello based on Montagnana 1740. The comfortably sized model has plenty of breadths giving a rich colourful and full-bodied response, with projection through the range. This instrument has been praised by prominent UK orchestra principals and professors. The centre bouts are not excessively wide, unlike some Montagnana patterns, allowing free bowing space, and the slightly sloping shoulders give good access to the upper left hand positions. From aged mountain-grown spruce and a fine grained limestone-grown sycamore, Crosby Ravensworth Fell Cumbria, 1983. My cellos have been commissioned by leading U.S. professors including the late Paul Olefsky, soloist and ex-principal Philadelphia and Detroit Symphony orchestras, and played within the New York Philharmonic. I am based in the Bodmin Moor/Tamar Valley area of Cornwall. During my time in Cumbria (1977 1985) I worked and made for musicians from Royal Northern Sinfonia, Scottish Chamber Orchestra and Manchester, before moving on to London and Oxfordshire. I have received awards from the Crafts Council and from Northern Arts on the recommendation of Wilfred Saunders, a major figure in British violin making. Montagnana model. The back in two pieces of maple of strong medium curl ascending across the back from the centre joint. The ribs, pegbox and scroll are similar. The front in two pieces of spruce of mixed medium-fine grain. The varnish of a rich, warm orange-brown colour on a yellow ground. Labelled 'Martin Morris, Liskeard Cornwal, (signed in ink) 2016.
