Cello By James Holder, Paris 1931 Thomas James Holder was born in Cardiff, Wales in 1874, son and pupil of his father Thomas Jacques Holder, who was held in high regard similar to Voller brothers. Thomas James went to Paris in 1913 opening his workshop at 16 Place du Havre in the 9th arrondissement. T J Holder is best known for his copies of old Italian instruments, primarily those of Gagliano and Guadagnini, he was also a highly gifted restorer. A fine and handsome Cello bearing the makers original label. The attractive two-piece back of maple of strong medium curl descending across the back from the centre joint, the ribs, peg box and scroll of similar curl. The table in two pieces of spruce of medium grain. The varnish of a richgolden orange-brown colour on a yellow ground.
