Pick up your canoe and paddle from Paddington Basin going at a pace to suit you. Your canoe adventure is somewhat less hazardous than the journey of a Canadian settler as you will be paddling up the Grand Union and The Regent's Canal. It may take a bit of time to get into your stroke, but before long you will stop thinking about the paddling and turn your gaze to the scenery. And it is fabulous scenery. Take in the architecture of Little Venice and Maida Vale. This is London at its most unexpected, seen from water, as you glance into back gardens and private spaces that you never knew existed. You could stop off for a drink or lunch at the very lovely Summerhouse in Little Venice, or just potter on and see how far you get, as on this stretch you won't be impeded by locks.
